Indian Head Massage in Hamilton

By Chirag Sojitra 14/06/2012

Indian head massage originated in India over 1000 years ago and began as a way of keeping the hair in good condition.  It is based on the ancient healing system of Ayurveda.

This form of massage works on the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp, ears and face.  The areas are massaged using firm yet gentle, rhythmic movements that involve acupressure points called Marma points.  Ayurvedic oils were traditionally used in this form of massage however the use of oils is now optional.

What is Indian head massage?

As implied by the name, the Indian head massage is a form of massage therapy created in India thousands of years ago. It is a deep style massage derived from the Ayurvedic tradition that focuses on the head, shoulders and neck.

Through a variety of different techniques, the massage works to release any blocked negative energy in the nervous system that may be manifesting itself as disease or injury in any one of the seven Chakras (energy centers) of the body. It does so by applying pressure to certain points on the neck, shoulders and head that correspond to individual Chakras as practiced in reflexology. This unblocks them, allowing for a free flow of energy around the body, restoring the individual to optimum health and feelings of wellbeing.

The process of Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage is great for relieving the stress and tension in our everyday lives. The technique uses controlled movements and has a strong effect on the three higher chakras – the mind, body and spirit. The Chakra is the energy vortex that we need to remain striving and because the massage works on the neck and shoulders, tension is relieved almost instantly.

Regular sessions of Indian head massage will result in a number of health benefits for you, and a course of treatments may be advised if a complex condition is involved.

During the massage, you remain seated and fully clothed.  The therapist will then stand behind or slightly to the side of the client to perform the massage. A treatment session usually last for thirty minutes.  This form of massage can be used with other type of massage, such as deep tissue massage, Chinese immune supporting massage and Chinese oil immune supporting massage with walking cup.

Benefits of Indian head massage

The Indian head massage generally soothes the nervous system, creating relaxed feelings of well-being. The application of pressure to certain points stimulates all vasomotor nerves, pain perception nerves, underlying joints, muscles and internal organs. Its effects on the nervous system depend on the points stimulated, and the consequent reflex reaction of each nerve.

Other benefits of Indian head massage to the nervous system include:

  1. A soothed and restored autonomic nervous system, resulting in reduced levels of depression and anxiety.

  1. Relaxation of tension in muscles that re-establishes good muscle condition via its effect on neuromuscular reflex pathways.

  1. An increase in the production of feel-good, pain-killing neurotransmitters such as endorphins.

  1. Reduced nerve entrapment and nerve root compression (caused by muscle tension)

  1. Reduced acute and chronic pain

  1. Relieved insomnia and feelings of restlessness.

Important note:

Whilst you are bound to feel great after our Indian head massage, there is a good chance you may not look great. Whether your masseuse has chosen to use oils or not, your hair will look tussled and potentially like you haven’t washed out your conditioner from a week ago! Make sure to take a hairbrush and band, or a hat to wear on the way home from your session.
