Lymphatic Massage in Hamilton

By Chirag Sojitra 21/07/2012

Lymphatic drainage is a holistic approach to promoting a healthy lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a complex network of vessels and ducts that move fluid throughout the body and is responsible for moving toxins away from healthy cells and carrying germ-fighting materials to cells when they are under attack by viruses. Though fluid moves through the lymphatic system, it does not have its own pumping mechanism. Lymphatic drainage is a type of therapy that is intended to help the body produce a free-flowing lymphatic system.

This type of therapy consists of a manual massage, performed by a lymphatic drainage therapist. Such a massage primarily focuses on specific lymph nodes and points of the body, as well as the natural flow of the lymphatic system. To help lymph fluid move through the body, special rhythmic hand strokes are used, which many patients consider very relaxing. Proponents of lymphatic drainage believe that the process will reduce blockages of the lymphatic system, which in turn promotes a healthier body.

Lymph nodes:

Eventually, all lymph vessels lead to lymph nodes. Lymph nodes can be as small as the head of a pin, or as big as an olive. There are 400-700 lymph nodes in the body, half of which are located in the abdomen, and many are in the neck.

The primary function of lymph nodes is to filter and purify the lymph. The lymph nodes produce various types of lymphocytes. Lymphocytes destroy harmful substances within the body, and are a big part of the immune system. The lymph nodes reabsorb about 40% of the liquid content of the lymph. This makes the lymph much thicker. Because of this thickening and the filtering process, the lymph nodes offer the greatest resistance to the flow of lymph. In fact the lymph nodes offer about 15 times more resistance than the vessels themselves. Lymphatic drainage can help overcome this resistance and get the lymph flowing.

Uses of LDT:

Detoxification

1.Chemical addiction

- (smoking etc., environmental, man made)

2.Chemo Therapy

- (it has a long half life, since it is a shotgun approach it can linger in tissue throughout the body and studies show there is a higher complain of mental fatigue after treatment)

3.Toxicity

- the body needs to move, if it becomes static it can become stagnant

-the longer a toxin is in your body the more opportunity it has to harm you

-external environmental toxins

-internal environmental toxins.

4.Helps to clear pre-surgical interstitial environment

-helps clear the localized tissue prior to surgical intrusion

-helps to reduce post surgical edema

-increases healing time

Fluidic balance

1. Reduces edema in interstitial environment - fluid needs to move through the tissue, imbalances in fluidic pressure can promote stagnation

2. Reduces inflammation post surgical (improves healing time dramatically)

3.Improves liquid transmission throughout the body (you get more energy, your body feels better and it works easier)

Improves Humeral Immune function

  1. AID’s.
  2. Chronic recurring colds,
  3. Fibromyalgia, (helps to break the pain / insomnia cycle) - fibro flare
  4. Chronic Fatigue

Tissue Regeneration

Better the circulation, fluidic balance and transport, the more efficient the regeneration of tissue

Contraindications of Lymphatic Drainage

Contraindications happen when an increase in lymph flow would be detrimental. Contraindications can either be absolute or relative. The physician can override relative contraindications if he or she finds good reason, but the absolute contraindication cannot be overridden.

Absolute Contraindications :

Acute inflammation - caused by bacteria, viruses and poisons are contraindicated. Tissues will be red, hot, and painful with congestion accompanied by fever. Lymphatic drainage will push these substances into the lymph channels before the body has a chance to eliminate them. This way one can spread the toxic substances throughout the body. It is best to wait a few days until the condition is not acute and the body has had a chance to clean up the area.

Malignant tumors – there is a fear of spreading the cancer.

Thrombosis – can lead to free floating blood clots in the circulatory system.

Major heart problems – if the heart is not fully functioning, edema can be lymphodynamic due to a lack of venous return. Pumping more fluid in the heart it may stress it more than the actual condition.
