Bladder Cancer: What Is It?
Bladder cancer is a cancer which affects the tissues of the bladder, the organ that holds urine. This cancer occurs when abnormal cells multiply and invade tissues in the body. The National Institutes of Health found that about 17,000 women and 45,000 men are diagnosed with bladder cancer per year.
Types of Bladder Cancer:
The three main types of bladder cancer are transitional cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma. In the United States, transitional cell carcinoma is the most common type of bladder cancer, while squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma are quite rare.
Transitional cells are found in the inner layer of the bladder. These cells can change shape when the tissue is stretched, without being damaged. When these cells become cancerous, it is called transitional cell carcinoma.
Squamous cell carcinoma may sometimes begin after a long-term infection or irritation in the bladder. Thin, flat squamous cells can then form in the bladder causing cancer.
The type of bladder cancer which occurs when glandular cells form in the bladder, is called adenocarcinoma. Glandular cells make up the glands in the body which produce mucus, and these cells can sometimes start to form in the bladder after long-term bladder irritation and inflammation.
Bladder Cancer Symptoms:
A key symptom of bladder cancer is observing blood in the urine, with or without pain. Symptoms which may indicate bladder cancer include blood in the urine, pain during urination, urgent urination, frequent urination, urinary incontinence, pain in the lower back and pain in the abdominal area. Other symptoms which may indicate more severe stages of bladder cancer include fatigue, bone tenderness and weight loss.
Chinese Medicine: How Can We Help?
Traditional Chinese Medicine can be used to treat numerous diseases and health problems, including cancers like bladder cancer. In Chinese Medicine, the organs inside the body are connected to the rest of the body, as well as being connected with emotional health. In a healthy state, the organs work together in pairs to achieve specific functions. For example, the kidneys and bladder work together, and control urine, reproductive health, bone strength and brain functions.
Health problems occur when organs become unbalanced. This means that one organ may become weak for some reason, and this may affect other organs. When the kidneys and bladder are out of balance you may experience symptoms like urine problems, menstrual problems, bone problems such as arthritis, poor memory and brain fog. You may also experience fear or getting a fright easily.
Chinese Medicine can help treat bladder problems by bringing the organs back into balance, through techniques such as acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Chinese Medicine can also help with cancer treatment, especially treating pain, inflammation and boosting the immune system. If you have had cancer treatments like surgery and chemotherapy, Chinese Medicine can help deal with the side effects like nausea and vomiting. Acupuncture is particularly effective, and rarely has any side effects.
Overall, bladder cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow in the bladder, and cause symptoms like blood in the urine, painful urination and bone problems. The three types of bladder cancer are transitional cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Chinese Medicine can help treat bladder cancer by bringing the organs back into balance through acupuncture, and by helping treat the side effects from other cancer treatments like surgery and chemotherapy.
