What is Hearing Loss?
Loss of hearing or deafness is a common health condition. About 25% of people between 65 years old and 74 years old experience hearing loss at some point. Loss of hearing can range from complete deafness to being partially unable to hear sounds. If you have hearing loss, one or both of your ears may be affected. In this article we will discuss the different types and symptoms of hearing loss, and how Chinese Medicine can help you treat it.
Types of Hearing Loss:
There are three main types of hearing loss: conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and mixed hearing loss. You may experience different symptoms depending on which type of hearing loss you have. Similarly, these types of hearing loss may be caused by different factors.
Conductive Hearing Loss:
Conductive hearing loss is when sounds cannot reach your eardrum and middle ear bones. You might experience conductive hearing loss if you have a build-up of wax in your ear, an ear infection, or swimmer’s ear. If you have conductive hearing loss you may find it hard to hear quiet sounds.
Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL):
Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is when your inner ear or nerve pathways from your ear to your brain become damaged. Factors that could cause SNHL include:
- Head traumas
- Non-cancerous growths on the ear nerves (acoustic neuroma)
- Birth defects
- Exposure to loud sounds
- Medications: many medications come with the risk of side effects including hearing damage
If you have SNHL, you may not be able to hear normal or loud sounds clearly. Unfortunately, SNHL is permanent in most cases.
Mixed Hearing Loss:
If your loss of hearing is caused by a combination of conductive hearing loss and SNHL, it is called mixed hearing loss.
Hearing Loss Symptoms:
Generally, hearing loss develops gradually over time, so you may not notice any obvious symptoms at first. However, in some cases hearing loss may indicate other health problems. Seek medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Sudden hearing loss
- Hearing problems with ear pain
- Severe hearing loss
- Ringing in your ears
- Hearing loss that gets worse, or interferes with your day-to-day life
- Weakness, numbness or headache with hearing loss
How Can Chinese Medicine Help?
If you suffer from hearing loss, you may be wondering how you can heal the problem. Chinese Medicine offers you a special treatment option for hearing loss, which considers your individual position and your whole body. This holistic approach to treatment addresses the root cause of your health problems, in contrast to most mainstream medicine treatments.
To heal your body fully, your practitioner needs to understand what is causing your health problem in the first place. Often, our health problems come up due to an underlying weakness or imbalance in our body. This is because all the organs and systems within our body are connected, so a weakness in one organ can affect other parts of your body. For example, the kidneys and bladder are responsible for maintaining the urine and reproductive systems, as well as ear health. So, if your kidneys or bladder are weak, you may be susceptible to ear problems like hearing loss.
Your Chinese Medicine practitioner will aim to find a treatment plan to help improve your underlying health problems. This means that your body will be in a better position to heal health problems like hearing loss.
Overall, the three types of hearing loss are conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), and mixed hearing loss. The causes and symptoms you experience may be different depending on what type of hearing loss you have. Chinese Medicine is an effective, holistic treatment for hearing loss, as it gets to the root cause of the problem.
